When confronted with the extraordinary diversity of the coconut palm and its uses, as well as the beauty and strangeness of the plant, some people become truly passionate. This passion for the coconut tree can sometimes reach a certain level of madness...

Lorsqu'elles sont confrontée à l'extraordinaire diversité du cocotier et de ses usages, ainsi qu'à la beauté et l'étrangeté de la plante, certaines personnes deviennent réellement passionnées. Cette passion pour le cocotier peut parfois atteindre un certain niveau de folie...

Les auteurs de ce site internet font bien sur partie des "gens fous de cocotier", mais les anecdotes racontées ici montrent qu'il existe ou qu'il a existé bien d'autres fous du cocotier!

Horned coconuts

Horned coconut! The coconut generally has a regular husk, round or oval shaped, except for some coconut freaks whose husk presents extraordinary excrescences!

An amazing poster could be designed to show the very diverse forms of horned coconut that exist in different countries and territories, including India, French Polynesia and Sri Lanka. There are nuts with one horn, with two and three horns, and their general shape is very variable.

We have several examples in our collection, with a three-horned one, the rarest being the three-horned one, and the most steeped in history being the one given by Teihotu Brando, the son of the late actor Marlon Brando, on the atoll of Tetiaroa in French Polynesia.

Branched coconut palms! The coconut palm generally consists of a unique trunk (or stem)topped with a broad crown of fronds and bunches. Except, of course, for the palms that are coconut freaks!

Dancing coconut eyes! Normal coconut has three eyes, or two eyes and one mouth,according to people perception and cultures. No more, no less! Except, of course, if they are coconut freaks!

This is the rarest form of horned coconut, and we hed the opportunity to collect and picture only one, in French Polynesia.

Here are some global views of horned coconut...

The appearance of the coconut palm itself is normal, it is only in the inflorescences and bunches that the peculiarities become visible. Coconuts contain a normal white kernel and germinate normally. The taste of the kernel does not differ from that of ordinary coconut palms.

The coconut palms themselves are normal. Some of them are not very productive, but not all of them. In French Polynesia, we observed some horned coconut palms which annually produced a good hundred fairly large fruits.

A Natural square coconut from French Polynesia!

Here is one of the rarest coconut husk botanic freak, a very rare natural square coconut from French Polynesia! The coconut husk normally have three sides only, and this one have 4, that gives the husk a shape of square when cut.  Inside the coconut shell is round and have normal 3 eyes. I was collected in 2021 from an attoll of the Tumaotu archipelago.

There are also ways to create artificial square coconut by by human intervention, but this one is the only fully natural!
